A Departing Gift for Your Loved Ones
It was December of 2018, and Jarilynn’s mother had just passed away. When her father died more than a decade earlier, Jarilynn and her two brothers did their best to be there for their mother as she made the arrangements, but they weren’t really involved. Now, faced with making all the decisions for their mother, Jarilynn and her brothers were awash in uncertainty.
“There was this air of questioning, being unsure, and second-guessing their ideas,” recalls Dutch Nie, the funeral director who worked with Jarilynn and her family. It’s a common scenario, says Nie, who also serves as a spokesperson for the National Funeral Directors Association.
Mutual of Omaha decided this common scenario — the death of a loved one being made even more difficult by the overwhelming demands of planning a funeral — needed a solution. So in 2018, United of Omaha Life Insurance Company, A Mutual of Omaha Company, created a strategic alliance with Everest Funeral Concierge, a funeral-planning and consulting service. Everest simplifies funeral planning by offering comprehensive end-of-life planning services, both in advance and at the time of need.
“Everest is an independent consumer advocate,” says Mark Duffey, its president and CEO. “Our goal is to reduce the burden and the cost for our customers by providing peace of mind and confidence when making difficult financial and emotional decisions.”
Recently, United of Omaha Life Insurance Company, a Mutual of Omaha Company, began offering Guaranteed Plus, a whole life insurance policy with a no-cost rider that includes Everest’s funeral concierge services. “A Guaranteed Plus policy is the best of both worlds, providing funds to help remove the financial burden and 24/7 concierge support to help ease the emotional burden,” says Duffey.
Brian Poppe, Mutual of Omaha senior vice president, says the company surveyed its life insurance customers and found that 81 percent want a more simplified funeral-planning process, while 76 percent want help finding a funeral home that offers fair prices.*
“Customers told us that one of their primary concerns was getting help with the burden of planning and organizing the funeral,” says Poppe.
How Everest Works
When a death occurs, the family is assigned a licensed funeral director who provides 24-hour assistance throughout the funeral process. This funeral director serves as an advisor to the family, carrying out the funeral plan if there’s one in place, or helping the family create one. Phone conferences can be scheduled for family members who are not local.
The advisor then provides a report from an Everest database that compares the prices of funeral homes for items and services ranging from the hearse to the casket to flowers. The family can compare prices and services of up to eight funeral homes, all in one report.
“Prices can vary widely in a given market,” Duffey says, “and nobody wants to spend time shopping around when they’re grieving the loss of a loved one.”
Everest also provides secure online planning and data storage so their customers can communicate their end-of-life wishes to family members, as well as create and preserve a will, a health-care directive, and power of attorney.**
A convenient element of Guaranteed Plus, Duffey says, is that United of Omaha pays the majority of claims within 24 hours, so proceeds are available quickly to help with funeral costs.
“Removing the financial and emotional burden of a funeral really is an especially thoughtful and caring departing gift to leave for those who matter most to you,” says Duffey.
