New technology devices can be tricky to navigate, even for the tech savvy. For seniors who grew up before the world was connected, the difficulty using personal devices such as smartphones, smartwatches and tablets can be made worse by deteriorating eyesight or limited dexterity.

But a new technology sector aimed at seniors has emerged with a focus on simple design and easy-to-use interfaces. The result is an array of devices and gadgets on the market that can help seniors maintain mental and physical well-being, stay connected to friends and family and, in some instances, just have fun.

The need for tech tools that keep seniors connected is clear. A 2019 report by the Health Resources and Services Administration cites that 43 percent of seniors feel lonely on a regular basis, and that loneliness and isolation can be as damaging to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.¹ Add in the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic has forced many seniors to stay home and limit their contact with others, and you have a market that's primed for innovations that allow seniors to stay connected.
