OMAHA, Neb. – The Mutual of Omaha Foundation has partnered with One Tree Planted to support the Eglin Air Force Base Reforestation Project. The Foundation provided a charitable grant to support the planting of nearly 29,000 trees on the base.

Located in the Florida panhandle, Eglin is the largest Air Force base in the world. It’s also home to more than 123 endangered species who live among the base’s 465,000 acres of land and 130,000 square miles of water ranges. Eglin is also the largest forested military reservation in the U.S.

“This funding has a real and lasting impact on the threatened and endangered species living in this unique and beautiful space,” said Cruz Cabrera, Social Impact Programs Manager, “We invested in this project because of its ecological benefits of clean air, improved water quality and habitat restoration.”

Trees play an integral role in helping landscapes adapt to an ever-changing climate. The trees planted through this project will do the same, creating a more resilient landscape that is better able to cope with the effects of climate change. Additionally, the project will help to reduce the impacts of urbanization on the local environment.

The U.S. Air Force is a proud environmental steward and has several public and private partnerships, which help accelerate overall habitat restoration at Eglin.

According to One Tree Planted, the impact of the Foundation’s grant will:

  • Restore 71.64 acres
  • Absorb 5,779 metric tons of carbon over the next 20 years
  • Produce 2,890 tons of oxygen per year upon reaching maturity

The Foundation’s investment in this project aligned with Mutual of Omaha’s commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), through its Protect Our Planet initiative.
