Paid Family Leave (PFL) Law effective since January 1, 2004.

California Paid Family Leave (PFL)  

Partially paid leave to care for a seriously ill or injured child, parent, parent-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, spouse, or registered domestic partner and for parents to bond within the first year with a biological, foster or adopted child.

California PFL offers leave for exigencies related to military active duty or call to active duty of an employee’s family member.

California state disability insurance provides short-term disability insurance.

California State Disability Insurance (SDI)  

SDI is comprised of Paid Family Leave (PFL) and Disability Insurance (DI).

Paid Family Leave

  • Up to 8 weeks of paid leave
  • 60-70% of pay, up to $1,698 per week for 2024

Disability Insurance

  • Up to 52 weeks of paid leave
  • 60-70% of pay, up to $1,698 per week for 2024

A private plan is allowed under the law.
