The Life Risk Underwriting team evaluates risk across underwriting programs through forensic underwriting, supports fraud detection and prevention, reviews production referrals, and supports living rescissions and contestable claim reviews.  The team also supports complaint handling, external audits, and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.

You'll serve as a trusted partner across the organization, strengthen cross-functional relationships, and help your team navigate change, solve complex challenges, and deliver high-quality outcomes.

  • Estimated Salary:  $112,000 - $150,000, plus annual bonus opportunity.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Lead and develop a high-performing underwriting team. Provide coaching, mentorship, performance management, recognition, and growth opportunities that foster engagement, accountability, and professional development. Ensure the team is appropriately staffed and positioned for success.
  • Drive operational excellence and business results. Establish team goals, priorities, and performance standards that support organizational objectives. Monitor service levels, underwriting quality, productivity, and profitability while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Oversee complex underwriting activity and escalations. Provide guidance on challenging cases, support sound decision-making, and ensure underwriting practices align with company policies, risk appetite, and regulatory requirements.
  • Champion process improvement and organizational change. Lead or contribute to initiatives that enhance underwriting processes, systems, and workflows. Act as a change advocate, helping teams adopt new tools, technologies, and best practices.
  • Build strong internal and external partnerships. Collaborate with business stakeholders to communicate underwriting assessments, resolve issues, and support business growth. Stay informed on industry trends, competitive products, emerging risks, and regulatory developments that impact the business.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

  • Leadership experience in underwriting or insurance operations. Proven ability to lead teams, develop talent, manage performance, and create an engaged, customer-focused culture.
  • Seasoned life underwriting knowledge and expertise.  Ability to make decisions and justify the decisions with sound and logical reasoning aligning within underwriting and product guidelines.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills. Ability to evaluate complex information, identify solutions, and make sound business decisions that balance risk, service, and profitability.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities. Comfortable influencing stakeholders, presenting information, resolving conflicts, and building productive partnerships across all levels of the organization.
  • Business and operational acumen. Experience managing priorities, resources, budgets, and team performance while driving continuous improvement and achieving business objectives.
  • Technical proficiency and adaptability. Comfortable using business applications, spreadsheets, reporting tools, and emerging technologies to support underwriting operations and team effectiveness. 
  • You promote a collaborative culture, value different ideas and opinions, and listen courageously, remaining curious in all that you do.
  • Able to work remotely with access to a high-speed internet connection and located in the United States or Puerto Rico.
  • Able to travel occasionally (approximately 10% annually - travel reimbursed).

PREFERRED:

  • Knowledge of insurance industry trends, underwriting practices, competitive products, and regulatory requirements.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Professional insurance designation (or active pursuit of one) is a plus.
