For Shaylin Daugherty Moore, an internship with Mutual of Omaha offered more than hands-on experience — it provided an opportunity to explore a new career path and build a foundation for the future.
As a graduate business intern in the company’s Workplace Scholars Program, Daugherty Moore works with short-term disability maternity claims. And she’s also pursuing her master’s in business administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Her path to Mutual wasn't a traditional one. After earning an undergraduate degree in psychology, Daugherty Moore decided to transition into the business world and sought an organization that could help her make that move.
"I wanted to get into or transition into the business world," Daugherty Moore said. "I thought this would be a good company to really help me explore a new career."
Mutual of Omaha's strong reputation also played a role in her decision.
"It's a really good company, one of the best in Omaha," she said.
Gaining real-world experience
During her internship, Daugherty Moore has worked directly with short-term disability claims, reviewing applications and determining eligibility for benefits. Depending on the day, she may process several claims while ensuring customers receive timely decisions and support.
Her work has given her valuable experience in a field that was entirely new to her.
"It's different from anything that I've done before," Daugherty Moore said.
The opportunity to gain hands-on experience while learning the business side of the insurance industry has helped support her career goals as she prepares to enter the workforce.
A fun, supportive culture
For Daugherty Moore, one of the most rewarding parts of her internship has been the people.
"I think, number one, the people that I work with are super cool and nice," she said. "Everyone is so helpful."
She also appreciates the company’s culture, which she describes as fun, welcoming and supportive.
That support extends beyond day-to-day responsibilities. Daugherty Moore said her manager has encouraged her professional growth and plans to explore different career options.
"My manager is super supportive," she said. "I talk to her all the time. She's really helpful."
According to Daugherty Moore, the internship experience at Mutual of Omaha goes beyond a single role or department. Associates and leaders are willing to help interns discover new interests and consider different career paths across the organization.
Advice for future interns

"Go for it! It's going to be a great experience," she said. "Your manager is going to help you and push you in the right direction."
