Building on Success: Student Returns to Mutual of Omaha for Second Internship
Evelyn Di Genova is an actuarial science intern at Mutual of Omaha. She works in the retirement planning division on the pricing team.
“I’m looking at different rate comparisons and reworking the system to streamline the pricing process so it’s easier to interpret the data,” Di Genova said.
This summer marks Di Genova’s second internship with Mutual of Omaha. She said the company’s flexible workplace, supportive culture and growth opportunities made coming back an easy decision.
Flexible workplace
The option to work remotely has made a meaningful difference for Di Genova, giving her the flexibility to spend time with family and attend summer classes while fulfilling her internship responsibilities.
But she wouldn’t be able to maintain this balance between work and school without the understanding and flexibility of her managers.
“I’ve had a lot of flexibility with my managers, which is great. I’m still a student, so I sometimes have summer courses I need to attend,” Di Genova said. “All my managers have been really nice about working with my school schedule. And I think that’s really unique.”
Supportive culture
Di Genova remembers feeling nervous when starting her first internship at Mutual of Omaha. Working remotely, she was apprehensive about getting her questions answered and feeling connected. Neither has been an issue.
“The people here are really nice about questions. And I feel really comfortable, especially now during my second internship, asking for help and getting the answers I need,” she said.
In addition, Di Genova said she's had many opportunities to meet associates throughout the company. She credits overview meetings and special outreach efforts, such as Lessons with Leaders, with helping her stay connected and engaged.
Growth opportunities
Di Genova’s time at Mutual of Omaha has been filled with new experiences that have helped her grow, especially when it comes to technology.
“I like getting to try a bunch of new resources and look at different databases,” Di Genova said. “There are a lot of different coding languages and a bunch of new technology, such as Teradata, that go beyond what I’m learning in college.”
She’s also expanded her knowledge and technical skills by working with different JavaScript applications.
“I’m confident that my experience at Mutual of Omaha will help me be competitive in the job market,” Di Genova said.
