When Deepson Shrestha reflects on his career journey, one theme stands out: growth through opportunity.

With cultural roots in Nepal, Shrestha says his upbringing strengthened his mental resilience and gives him a unique perspective on how technology can positively shape the world.

His career trajectory began taking shape during his undergraduate years at Truman State University in Missouri. In May 2021, he secured a summer internship at Mutual of Omaha — a decision that set him on a fast-paced and meaningful path in technology.

Launching a career through an internship

“My internship was focused on creating a simple Spring Boot application with a Thymeleaf user interface to visualize back-end processes for developers,” Shrestha said. “It was an internal tool, but the project taught me how complex systems work together and how technology can be made understandable and accessible.”

The internship proved transformative. The project’s success and the collaborative environment helped Shrestha realize he’d found his calling in software development.

Encouraged by his manager, teammates and the opportunities at Mutual of Omaha, Shrestha decided to forgo his minor in biology — which would have required an extra year of study — and accepted a full-time role as an application developer immediately after his internship.

Growing through diverse experiences

Since joining Mutual of Omaha, Shrestha has worked across multiple teams and projects. His work includes developing user interfaces for internal tools, building scalable fault-tolerant APIs and constructing data pipelines using AWS Cloud and Snowflake. He also developed interfaces enabling insurance agents and brokers to retrieve 1099 forms for tax filing and worked on projects aimed at creating a reliable source of policy and seller information.

His progression from intern to engineer reflects both his determination and the company’s culture of developing talent. He currently leads efforts to modernize the broker portal, a platform brokers use to manage appointments, state licenses and eligibility to sell insurance products.

“I’ve been trusted to lead revenue-critical initiatives,” Shrestha said. “These aren’t just short-term projects — they’re building the long-term technological foundation that will support the company’s growth and our ability to serve customers for years to come.”

Shrestha’s role now also includes exploring AI initiatives, participating in pilot projects and shaping strategies to integrate AI into business processes.

“Within the next few years, I hope to play a significant role in determining how AI can be maximized across our processes,” he said.

Mentorship and leadership

Shrestha credits both personal initiative and organizational support for his success.

“Every time I’ve taken on something new, I’ve had to get out of my comfort zone,” he said. “At the same time, my managers and team were incredibly open to connecting me to the right people and projects that would foster my growth. That combination of initiative and opportunity is unique and empowering.”

He has embraced mentoring by guiding interns and providing leadership across several high-impact projects. He also served as a liaison for the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management, leading a group of students through their Design Studio capstone project.

Advice for future associates

For technologists aspiring to join Mutual of Omaha, Shrestha’s story carries a clear message: growth comes from curiosity, initiative and a willingness to explore beyond familiar boundaries. Mutual of Omaha provides the environment and opportunities, but it’s the individual’s drive that turns potential into achievement.

“From an undergraduate intern visualizing back-end workflows to an engineer leading full-stack projects and mentoring teams within a few years, I’ve learned that determination, adaptability and the right support can truly shape a thriving career in technology,” Shrestha said.
