Lead Data Architect - Remote
Location: Remote
Work Type: Full Time Regular
Job No: 504770
Categories: Information Technology
Application Closes: Open Until Filled
At Mutual of Omaha, data isn't just infrastructure, it's the engine behind smarter decisions, better customer experiences, and a future built on intelligent automation. We're looking for a Lead Data Architect to join our Workplace Solutions division and take ownership of how we design, evolve, and operationalize our data and AI platforms. This is a brand new role with real influence. You'll shape strategy, build the foundation, and leave a mark on how a 100-year-old company becomes data-powered.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU:
- Estimated Salary: $160,000 – $185,000, plus annual bonus opportunity
- 401(k) plan with a 2% company contribution and 6% company match
- Work-life balance with vacation, personal time and paid holidays. See our benefits and perks page for details.
This role is classified as remote; however, periodic in-person attendance will be required at times for activities such as quarterly or project planning, training, or other business-critical meetings.
Applicants for this position must not now, nor at any point in the future, require sponsorship for employment.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Design and own the data architecture for Workplace Solutions — building cloud-native platforms that power analytics, machine learning, and intelligent automation at scale
- Define and drive the roadmap for data modernization, MLOps, and AI governance across the division in partnership with enterprise architects and business stakeholders
- Lead AI and ML prototyping efforts — running POCs, design sprints, and "what-if" scenarios to validate ideas and prove business impact before full investment
- Establish and uphold standards for data quality, responsible AI, and secure model deployment, ensuring regulatory compliance and long-term trust in our data assets
- Connect data solutions across microservices, event-based architectures, and external partners — ensuring everything is scalable, observable, and production-ready
- Coach and level up data engineers and analysts in data modeling, feature engineering, and ML development best practices
- Guide architecture decisions within an Agile Release Train (ART), translating complex technical tradeoffs into clear, actionable direction for delivery teams
WHAT YOU'LL BRING:
- 5+ years leading data architecture initiatives including cloud-native platforms, ML lifecycle management, and enterprise data integration
- Deep expertise in data warehouse and data lakehouse design, distributed data systems, and logical/physical/multidimensional data modeling
- Hands-on experience deploying ML models into production using tools like MLflow, SageMaker, or equivalent frameworks
- Strong Python and SQL skills with a track record of building real, production-grade data solutions
- Cloud experience (AWS preferred) including model deployment via containers, APIs, or serverless frameworks
- Proven ability to design and deliver ETL/ELT pipelines from source to target at enterprise scale
- Strong command of data governance, stewardship, and responsible AI principles
- Excellent communication skills — able to lead across technical and business teams and explain architecture clearly to non-technical stakeholders
PREFERRED:
- Experience with Snowflake, MongoDB, and the AWS AI/ML stack (SageMaker, Bedrock, Glue, Redshift)
- Familiarity with MLOps practices, data mesh principles, and real-time analytics tools like Kafka or Spark
- TOGAF certification
- Background in group benefits, insurance, or financial services
- Experience with data observability tools, CI/CD for ML, and lineage/trust frameworks
