Mutual of Omaha is seeking a Middleware Engineer to join the Common Technology Platform (CTP) team. Seeking an experienced and systems thinking engineer to help operate today’s enterprise platforms while supporting CTP’s modernization efforts. This role will manage Tomcat Server, WebSphere, HCL/WebSphere Portal, IBM MQ, ACE, and IIS, partnering closely with CTP’s Containers, Cloud, and Developer Enablement groups to improve the Jo Dev experience and accelerate delivery.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU:

  • Estimated Salary (Levels have variable responsibilities and qualifications):

  • Engineer I: $95,000 - $115,000, plus annual bonus
  • Engineer II: $110,000 - $130,000, plus annual bonus
  • Engineer III: $120,000 - $145,000, plus annual bonus

  • 401(k) plan with a 2% company contribution and 6% company match

  • Applicants for this position must not now, nor at any point in the future, require sponsorship for employment.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Operate and support core middleware runtimes with a primary focus on Tomcat ServerWebSphere Application Server (WAS), and WebSphere/HCL Portal, including installs, patching, configuration, troubleshooting, and performance tuning across Linux/Windows environments.

  • Manage platform traffic flows by partnering closely with the F5 network/load balancing team, understanding how requests traverse VIPs, pools, health checks, and iRules, and ensuring application teams route services correctly through the network path.

  • Diagnose complex issues at the intersection of app + network + middleware, including SSL/TLS handshake problems, header manipulation, session stickiness, reverse proxy behavior, redirects, and multitier traffic flows.

  • Collaborate with networking and security teams when changes to F5, firewall rules, or routing may impact application availability—ensuring safe implementation through change management and clear communication.

  • Contribute to modernization work by supporting migrations away from Tomcat Server and WebSphere/Portal as those platforms are decommissioned, and partnering with Containers/Private Cloud teams on forward-looking architectures

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

  • Hands on experience supporting enterprise web application platforms, including Apache, Tomcat Server and one or more IBM platforms (WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere/HCL Portal).

  • Proven track record of leadership, bias for action and a customer-first mindset.

  • Agile mindset with experience in iterative development environments using JIRA and Confluence or similar tools.

  • Able to work remotely with access to a high-speed internet connection and in a listed location.

  • You promote a culture of diversity and inclusion, value different ideas and opinions, and listen courageously, remaining curious in all that you do

PREFERRED:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with middleware technologies and enterprise level platform support.

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.

  • Ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

We value diverse experience, skills, and passion for innovation. If your experience aligns with the listed requirements, please apply!
