As an Underwriter on our Individual Underwriting team, you’ll play a key role in assessing risk for medium to large, more complex individual insurance cases. You’ll use sound judgment and underwriting expertise to evaluate medical and financial risk for new business, reinstatements, and policy changes, while staying within established approval authority. This role balances independent decision-making with collaboration, customer focus, and continuous improvement in a fast-paced underwriting environment.

This role may be filled at the Underwriter I, II, III, IV, or V level, depending on experience.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU:

  • Estimated Salary (Levels have variable responsibilities and qualifications):
    • Underwriter I: $23.25 - $28.87 per hour, plus annual bonus opportunity.
    • Underwriter II:  $25.50 - $32.00 per hour, plus annual bonus opportunity.
    • Underwriter III:  $68,000 - $87,500, plus annual bonus opportunity.
    • Underwriter IV: $86,000 - $114,000, plus annual bonus opportunity.
    • Underwriter V:  $99,000 - $133,500, plus annual bonus opportunity.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Develop and maintain underwriting rules: Support rule development and enhancements to ensure alignment with company guidelines, regulatory requirements, and reinsurance standards.
  • Research and identify improvement opportunities: Analyze underwriting trends, vendor capabilities, and process gaps to recommend and implement rule changes that improve automation and customer experience.
  • Create and manage reporting: Build and maintain reports related to Express and automated underwriting performance, providing insights to stakeholders for decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with vendors and partners: Maintain and support vendor tools used in automated underwriting, ensuring functionality, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Act as a subject matter expert: Apply underwriting knowledge to validate rule logic, troubleshoot issues, and provide guidance to peers and partners on automated underwriting processes.
  • Drive innovation and efficiency: Partner with underwriting, claims, and technology teams to advance automation initiatives, streamline workflows, and enhance operational effectiveness.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

  • Individual underwriting experience: Demonstrated life insurance underwriting experience, with a strong foundation in Individual Underwriting concepts, practices, and tools (e.g., MIB, reinsurance manuals, automated decisioning platforms).
  • Underwriting rules & automation experience: Hands-on experience supporting or maintaining underwriting rules, decision logic, or automated underwriting tools, with an understanding of how guidelines, regulations, and reinsurance requirements come together.
  • Strong risk assessment skills: Proven ability to analyze complex medical and financial risk, investigate concerns, and justify underwriting decisions using sound judgment.
  • Attention to detail and organization: Ability to manage multiple concurrent cases, adapt to changing priorities, and maintain accuracy under pressure.
  • Clear communication and collaboration: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships across underwriting, operations, and business partners.

  • Able to work remotely with access to a high-speed internet connection and located in the United States or Puerto Rico.

PREFERRED:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent work experience and FLMI, FALU, or CLU courses completed for designation or being actively pursued.
  • Experience with Accelerated Underwriting program.
  • Experience with Long Term Care underwriting.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience strongly preferred.
