What is NorthSTAR?
NorthSTAR (North Students Training for Adult Roles) is a mentoring program developed from a partnership between Information Services and Omaha North High School – an Omaha Public Schools computer magnet school.

The NorthSTAR program offers you the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of high school students as they begin thinking about their future by introducing them to different facets of the business world, as well as the community.

How Does NorthSTAR Work?
NorthSTAR is a program that pairs North students with mentors. These relationships allow the students to see the “working world” firsthand – and help them successfully get started down the path toward their future career.

Through monthly group activities centered around business, secondary education, community service and social events, you have the opportunity to present students with a variety of career options.

Why is I/S involved with NorthSTAR?
NorthSTAR provides I/S the opportunity to develop future leaders for Mutual of Omaha and the community. As a computer magnet school, Omaha North High School is an ideal source for future talent.

What are the responsibilities of a NorthSTAR mentor?
NorthSTAR mentors are asked to:

  • Participate in monthly group activities
  • Demonstrate a willingness to work with high school students
  • Share personal career experiences
  • Provide guidance and support as a positive role model

What are the time requirements for a mentor with NorthSTAR?
The program continues for the entire school year and is based on a group activity each month. Mentors are encouraged to make weekly contact with their students. Examples of group activities include:

  • Tours of local businesses
  • “Shadowing” at work
  • Fun social events
  • Area college campus tours
  • Community service activities

How Do I get involved as a mentor?

However, becoming a mentor is not the only way to participate in NorthSTAR. Volunteers are also needed to:

  • Provide contact information for area businesses
  • Help coordinate monthly activities
  • Facilitate presentations
  • Offer summer internship positions

How Do I get involved as a student?
North students and parents can get more information on the NorthSTAR program from the North High School counseling office or by contacting a current NorthSTAR mentor.

What are the requirements to participate in NorthSTAR?
As a NorthSTAR student, you need to be ready to:

  • Be open and honest
  • Be respectful of others
  • Attend annual kickoff meeting
  • Participate in monthly group activities
  • Keep communication lines open
  • Establish a successful working relationship with your mentor
  • Keep appointments and follow through with contacts
