Behavioral Interviews

If you've ever been asked to give an example of a time when you delivered service in a way that clearly showed care and concern for your customer, then you've participated in a behavioral interview.

Mutual of Omaha is one of many companies that conduct behavioral interviews to find out how well a candidate is likely to perform on the job. Interviewers will be looking for very detailed responses.

Mutual uses a method called SHARE (Situation, Hindrance, Action, Result and Evaluation) to help us evaluate your responses. The SHARE model is a tool that can be used to help you communicate your past experience. We realize that not all experiences end in success, but please indicate what you learned and what you would do differently if you had to repeat the experience.

S Situation Please describe a time when … (please provide a specific situation)
H Hindrance What hindrances or challenges did you face in that situation?
A Action What action(s) did you take?
R Result What was the result?
E Evaluation How would you evaluate the result? What did you learn?

As you prepare for your interview, take time to recall work experiences in the past that may demonstrate performance skills for the position to which you are applying.

Practice Using Behavioral Interview Questions

As you prepare for your interview, take a few minutes to figure out how you might answer one of these questions.

  • Many people are better at identifying where they want to get rather than how to get there. Describe a time when you generated an elaborate action plan that led to an identified goal.
  • Tell me about a time when you demonstrated dependability in a trying situation.
  • Describe a situation in which you persisted in completing a task or project despite obstacles.
  • When have you gone out of your way to help an associate at work? Describe a specific situation.
  • Describe a situation that illustrates your ability to be a team player.
